In a theater performance the music is often played by an ensemble, this is called the pit. This ensemble is typically placed in a lowered area in front or to the sides of the stage, this lets the musicians see their conductor properly without obstructing the audiences view of the musical.

The ensemble may contain a wide variety of instruments from woodwinds, brass, strings and percussion. The instruments used changes with the type of musical being performed.
